Deep listening is a state of ultimate receptivity. While hearing is an involuntary process, listening is a practice. When we listen, we nurture our awakeness, our presence, and our availability to what is. Listening is an act of discipline and respect; it is the first duty of love.

From September 14-16, we invite you to join us for a communal weekend of deep listening.

Amid 95 acres of forest in the Catskills’ Shawangunk Ridge, in deeper connection with nature and the natural intelligence of our bodies, we will work intentionally with sound and silence – external and internal, solo and in community, in stillness and movement – to find relaxation and nourishment, explore new challenges, and improve our ability to listen.

We don’t want to give too much away, but here is what you can expect:

  • Sound: meditative music performances, sound baths, tuning into the sounds of nature
  • Silence: dedicated time for silence
  • Ritual + Ceremony: opening + closing circles, a six-hour sound journey on Saturday night
  • Fire + Drum Circle: collective release around the fire on Friday night
  • Movement: hikes + nature walks, swimming at nearby waterfalls
  • Meditation: deep listening exercises, group meditation, separate meditation room indoors, meditation labyrinth outdoors

Our intention is that you leave this retreat not just entertained but changed by what you hear.

Your Guides:

Facilitating our journey through the rich sonic environment are three sound adventurers who have studied music, sound, meditation, movement, ceremony, and deep listening from teachers across the globe.

Casey Karr is a musician and sonic explorer who has made a lifelong study of sound and the mind. As a multi-instrumentalist with a professional background in addictions counseling and human rights advocacy, she approaches sound as tool for self-discovery and healing. Beginning with the understanding that sound impacts our physiology and shapes our awareness, her work is aimed at exploring, expressing, and nurturing the true self.

Hatim Belyamani – aka HAT – unites artists in an ever-evolving audio-visual dance between traditional music and digital remix art. An accomplished musician, he founded the non-profit remix ←→ culture to pursue his vision of bridging cultural divides through music, film, remix, and dance. He can be found traveling the world, recording and filming traditional musicians, facilitating workshops, and performing at festivals.

Shawn Feeney is a visual artist and musician exploring the connections between bodies and sounds. With a BA in Music from Harvard and MFA in Intermedia from the University of Auckland, Shawn is a certified Deep Listening® practitioner and holds a certificate in Sound, Voice, and Music in the Healing Arts from the California Institute of Integral Studies.
