I’m making 127 drawings combining the faces of friends. The first set of 64 drawings is below. I’m currently working on the next phase of this project: combining the combinations until finally there is one drawing emergent from all 128 faces. When the project is finished I’ll have an exhibition, distribute the originals, and post the images publicly, but until then, only my Patreon supporters will have access to see these new drawings, plus some extras: in-progress footage and time-lapse videos, drawing tutorial videos, one-on-one drawing lessons with me, and custom portraits. Inspired by my experience as a forensic artist for the New York Police, I drew the faces of 64 pairs of combined friends. Now I’m drawing a series of further combinations; 32 drawings combining four faces each, 16 drawings derived from eight faces each, and so on until finally there is one drawing emergent from all 128 faces (see diagram below).
The first set of 64 drawings (completed in June 2014) is posted below. I’m using charcoal on Stonehenge paper, 8.5 x 11″. It was first come, first served – the first 64 people who sent in usable photos are included, and drawings are made in the order that the photos were received.
From the initial set of 64, the original drawings will go to the friends of the people who sent in the photos – an experiment in gift economy. I began accepting submissions in November 2007 and filled up all the spots in May 2008. Participants include people from across the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, China, and beyond.
I plan to have a show of the drawings in the physical world when they are all completed, and then distribute the originals.
